Zika: after exposure in pregnancy, tell obstetric care.

Most Zika infections are mild or silent. The reason it matters is pregnancy: infection during any trimester can affect the developing brain. Exposure is a notification, not a panic.

Three barriers, all three up

Zika protection for a pregnancy is architecture plus chemistry, layered. Any one alone leaks.

Barrier 1 · Screens

Intact window and door mesh, pressed tight at every corner. Aedes are day biters; the house is the shield.

Barrier 2 · Clothing

Long sleeves and pants treated or plain, during morning and late afternoon. Skin covered is skin protected.

Barrier 3 · Registered repellent

DEET, icaridin or IR3535 per label, on exposed skin only. Reapply by the clock, not by feel.

The one action that matters

Pregnant after visiting a transmission zone, or a partner has: notify your obstetric team and use protection or abstain per CDC windows.

Zika symptoms are mild: fever, rash, joint pain, red eyes. The harm is to the fetus, not the patient. That is why the action is a call, not a cure.

Pregnancy and travel: the decision path

For planned or current pregnancy, and for partners, the windows are written down; follow them.

Trying to conceive?

Both partners wait the advised window after travel to a transmission zone, or after a positive test, before conceiving.

Already pregnant?

Any travel to a transmission zone gets reported to the obstetric team, even without symptoms. Testing is their call.

Partner traveled?

Use condoms or abstain for the advised window. Zika transmits sexually, not just by mosquito.

Is Zika dangerous if I am pregnant? Infection during pregnancy can cause microcephaly and other brain defects in the baby. Any exposure in a transmission zone means notifying your obstetric care, testing per guidance, and protected intercourse for the advised window.
