Chikungunya: the joint pain that outstays the fever.
Fever ends in a week; the joint pain can last months or years. Chikungunya rarely kills, but it can disable. Management is supportive, and pacing matters.
PLATE 203
- Fine droplet cloud: contact kill, no residue
- Fence line at dawn: where adults rest
Same fever, different leftover
Chikungunya and dengue share a mosquito, a city, and a first week. The leftover is what tells them apart.
- Aedes aegypti and albopictus, day biters, urban containers
- Sudden fever, rash and joint pain in the first days
- No specific antiviral; fluids and paracetamol first
- NSAIDs only after dengue is excluded, because the two circulate together
- Joint pain is the signature, not a side note, and can last months or years after the fever ends
- Rarely hemorrhagic, rarely fatal; the harm is disability, not shock
- One live vaccine exists for adults in some countries; dengue vaccines are a different decision
When to seek care
Most cases recover at home. These situations mean clinical review.
Fever gone, joints still loud: three steps
Most people recover at home. These three questions decide whether home is still the right place.
That pattern is expected. Pace activity; rest beats pushing through.
That is a clinic visit, not a wait-it-out week.
Ask for rheumatology follow-up. Persistent pain is documented, not imagined.
THE QUESTION PEOPLE ACTUALLY TYPE
How long does chikungunya joint pain last? The fever usually resolves within a week, but joint pain can persist for months and in some cases years. There is no curative antiviral; management is symptomatic and paced.
